The food was good but the tortillas were small and the cheese they use with the breakfast wasn't my favorite version of that kind of cheese. Would I return yes. The pupusas are not greasy and that alone would make me come back.
Overview
If you ever find yourself wandering down 229 Main St in Hackettstown, NJ, there’s a cozy spot that might just steal your heart and your appetite - Restaurant Y Pupuseria Los Veliz. Tucked neatly among local shops and neighborhood favorites, this diner-style restaurant brings the comforting flavors of Central America to small-town New Jersey in a way that feels both homey and authentic.
From the moment you step inside, there’s a sense of warmth that goes beyond the food. The staff greets you like an old friend, even if it’s your first visit. The aroma of grilled corn masa and sizzling meat fills the air - a promising sign that something delicious is being made from scratch in the kitchen. The walls are simple yet inviting, sometimes adorned with bright touches of Salvadoran culture that remind you that good food often tells a story.
What truly sets this place apart is its pupusas - handmade, golden-brown, and stuffed with fillings like cheese, beans, or chicharrón. Having tried several versions across different spots in New Jersey, none quite compare to the texture and flavor here. Each pupusa arrives hot off the griddle, crispy on the outside with just enough stretch from the melted cheese inside. It’s served with curtido, a tangy pickled cabbage slaw, and a mild tomato sauce that perfectly balances the richness of the dish. I once watched the cook flatten and grill the masa dough by hand, flipping each pupusa with practiced ease - a process that reflects both skill and tradition.
Beyond pupusas, the menu offers a comforting mix of Latin American classics. The carne asada plate, for instance, features tender grilled beef paired with rice, beans, and fresh tortillas. The plantains - sweet, caramelized, and soft - are the perfect sidekick. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, the chicken soup brims with flavor, filled with vegetables and herbs that taste like a grandmother’s home remedy. For weekend visitors, the specials change slightly, often featuring tamales or yucca frita that regulars swear by.
Having dined here multiple times, I’ve noticed how consistent the service and quality are. The portions are generous, and the prices are fair - ideal for families or anyone craving hearty comfort food. Reviews online echo the same sentiment. Many diners describe the restaurant as “a hidden gem,” often noting how its authenticity reminds them of home. According to local food blogs in Warren County, it’s also one of the few spots in the area that offers truly traditional Salvadoran cuisine, adding diversity to Hackettstown’s growing food scene.
Professionally speaking, it’s clear that the owners understand the value of keeping things simple and true. They focus on fresh ingredients, familiar recipes, and friendly service - the foundation of any good dining experience. A study from the National Restaurant Association highlights that over 70% of customers value authenticity and consistency above everything else when choosing where to eat, and Restaurant Y Pupuseria Los Veliz seems to embody that perfectly.
There’s also something special about how this place connects people. Families linger after meals, chatting over coffee, while newcomers often leave with a smile, vowing to return. It’s not just about the food - it’s about the sense of belonging. Even for someone who isn’t from El Salvador, there’s a universal comfort in a warm, freshly cooked meal made with care.
If you’re planning to visit, finding it is easy. The location at 229 Main St, Hackettstown, NJ 07840, United States, is conveniently accessible with parking nearby. Whether you’re grabbing takeout or sitting down for a leisurely lunch, it’s worth taking the time to savor each bite. Just remember to bring your appetite - and maybe a friend to share those extra pupusas with.

I have only ordered through doordash from this restaurant, so I can't speak for the dine in experience, but so far, everything has been delicious. I have ordered their pupusas, carne asada hondureña, sopa de res, and bistec a caballo. My orders have always arrived ahead of time, generous portions, and nice and warm. Recommended!
Always come here for takeout lunch or a big dinner. Prices are great so good value.
I placed an order of 30 pupusas for a small get together. There's not many pupusa venues around this area so I was hesitant. To my surprise the mixed and lorocco pupusas were delicious. Definitely coming back. Princing seems to be right as pupusas are usually about 2 bucks each.
Very nice place. I came with my kids and it was quiet and pleasant. Food came out fairly quickly for a sit down restaurant. My kids loved loved the pupusas and they are hard to please. They had 5 and they ate all of them! I had the Centroamericano and it was delicious and also a great portion. Took tacos to my partner at home. They said the tacos were great. We also had two fruit batidos. Overall, great food, at a great price, and nice atmosphere with good service. The waitress' voice is very soft spoken so she may come across as "rude" as I saw in some comments but I think she just has a very soft voice and might be a little shy. She was a nice woman! Will visit again!
I get my pupusas from here. I always order ahead for pick up. The family likes them a lot, especially the chicken with cheese. They give you lots of cole slaw and sauce with it. The pupusas are a good size and are all made fresh. The price for the pupusas are reasonable.
